ADVANTAGESMEETING YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL NEEDS The Distance learning Programs allow you to identify your needs and meet your personal and professional objectives. We have been running programmes since 1998, and have trained hundreds of professionals from over 80 different countries. Most of our programmes are interdisciplinary, and will equip you for a wider professional role in society, developing your capacity to take responsibility, to make decisions and to work without supervision, as well as part of a team. A FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO LEARNING INTER-CEPT offers a wide variety of options as to when, where and how programmes can be studied, so that you can choose the right combination for your lifestyle. Our programmes can be studied face-to-face in our dedicated lecture rooms at INTER-CEPT or in your own home by distance learning. The INTER-CEPT distance learning (DL) programmes will be of particular interest to you if you are unable to take time away from your work to undertake a full-time residential course, or if you and your employer (or sponsor) wish to save on the cost of travelling and living at the Institute. You can study for these programmes wherever you are in the world. DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES Since 1998, we have offered various programmes in Emergency and Humanitarian Assistance, that can be studied entirely by distance learning at one of three levels: Advanced Diploma, Diploma or Certificate. ADVANTAGESDistance learning with INTER-CEPT takes place by correspondence. It is a form of education designed to be as flexible as possible to meet the training needs and requirements of both you, as an individual, and the organization you represent. Flexibility of place - means that study is not confined to any particular location. You can study anywhere in the world because you are not required to meet your tutors face-to-face, even though tutor support is a key element of the Distance learning with INTER-CEPT. INTER-CEPT programmes. Flexibility of time - enables you to study at the most convenient times of the day or week, so you can remain in your job and study part-time. Flexibility of content - means that you can devise your own programme of study based on a range of subjects, although some modules are compulsory. Flexibility of pace - allows you to control the rate at which you study, and to concentrate on particular areas of interest. In other words, distance learning with INTER-CEPT gives you, the learner, more control over what you learn, and where and how you learn it. This does not mean that our programmes are not structured. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Learning takes place within the planned framework of Diploma modules. Each module comprises a series of units (usually 12) which further define the focus of your study. What distance learning with INTER-CEPT involves: Distance learning with INTER-CEPT involves the learner and tutor in a cycle of study, directed assignments, and feedback. STUDY When you enrol for one of our Diploma programmes by distance learning, we will send you a comprehensive study guide along with a study pack for the first module that you have chosen. The pack will contain a set of study notes and associated reading material. The notes present you with defined learning objectives, detailed yet focused information about the subject, and references to supporting text from the associated publications. So we provide you with everything you require to get started. YOUR NETWORK OF SUPPORT When you enroll for the diploma, you will be assigned a "mentor." This individual, selected because of his/her experience in your particular field of interest, will be available for limited consultation by e-mail, fax or phone as you plan your curriculum, pursue your studies and complete your professional study project ASSIGNMENTS As you work through the study notes, you will be required to submit assignments. An assignment is your response to questions which are posed to you at intervals throughout the module. These questions are based on the material you are expected to have studied up to that point. There are usually two assignments to submit for each module (some modules such as the Individual Research Project have more). For each, there is a specified date by which it has to arrive at INTER-CEPT. The weighting of the marks for each assignment increases throughout the module, normally being 40% and 60% for the first and second assignments (a different weighting applies where there are more assignments). FEEDBACK Feedback is essential to the learning process and is therefore one of the main features of our distance learning programmes. Feedback provides you with the information you require to progress with your study by answering two basic questions:
Feedback takes the form of a grade and constructive advice sent to you by your tutor when you have submitted each assignment. We aim to normally send the feedback out within three weeks of the assignment submission date. There are also opportunities for you to receive advice about areas of concern related to the subjects you are studying but which may not be specifically related to your assignments. You can do this by completing one of the Query Forms contained in your study pack or contacting us by email. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Entry qualifications vary according to the Programme and level of study. Please read the information given in the description of the different Programmes. Candidates whose first degree was not undertaken in English must hold an appropriate certificate demonstrating fluency in written and spoken English. MODULE BOOKING FORMS This will be sent to you upon admission to the Institute. THE STUDY SCHEDULE Each module (with the exception of the Individual Research Project) is based on an estimated total of 60 hours of study for reading module notes; additional reading; and completing the assignments. A maximum of 4 modules (Minimum 3) can be completed within 3-month period. This allows sufficient time for study, submission of assignments and feedback. It also provides the opportunity for two modules to be taken simultaneously for those who have time available. But you must complete your Diploma studies within 2 years, your Advanced Diploma studies within 3 years, of registration. Single modules can be studied as part of a professional development programme (PDP). ASSESSMENT Your module assignments will be assessed at INTER-CEPT. The method of examination by continuous assessment reflects the procedures for residential programmes at INTER-CEPT. On application, however, you are asked to nominate a local guarantor who will be required to counter-sign each assignment assuring it to be your own work. Your guarantor will require approval from INTER-CEPT. Although you will be encouraged to correspond with your Module Tutor by using the Query Forms provided in your study pack, you will be asked to submit your assignments through the Distance Learning Administrator at INTER-CEPT.These will be assessed anonymously by your Module Tutor and returned to you through the Distance Learning Administrator, thus ensuring that assessment is fair and impartial. YOUR DISTANCE LEARNING GUARANTOR You should nominate a local person as a guarantor. This person should occupy a position of authority - for example your sponsor, employer, manager or supervisor. They should know you well and be available to counter-sign each assignment, confirming that they believe that the work completed is all your own. The guarantor cannot be a member of your family. Before nomination, you should discuss arrangements for counter-signature of assignments with your proposed guarantor. We will contact your guarantor for confirmation of these arrangements. CONTACT WITH OTHER DISTANCE LEARNERS Sharing experience and establishing contacts is an important aspect of training. You can choose to join an email-based discussion list to communicate with fellow participants. APPLICATION FOR SCHOLARSHIPS The scholarships are only open to people who have already been offered a place on one of the INTER-CEPT Diploma programmes, so if you have not yet got an offer of a place you need not to apply for a scholarship. These distance learning bursaries are available thanks to the INTER-CEPT EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT TRUST, which raises funds from former students and other friends of the Centre, and from a generous grant from various Development Organizations. INTER-CEPT provide a scholarship of upto 50% of the total fee of the course. The remaining fee has to be found by the student from other sources.
